On April 13, 2004 the MRTA (Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand) started with the test run, free for public, its first route of underground electric mass rapid transit system from Hua Lam Phong (Main Railway Station) to Bang Sue, a total distance of 20 kilometers. The regular operation will start from July 3, 2004.
Extension projects are already formulated to extend the MRTA routes to cover 91 kms distance.
